How to Perform Moisture Analysis?
The microwave oven method is a simple and rapid technique used for determining moisture content in plant materials. This method is commonly employed in various industries, such as agriculture, food processing, and pharmaceuticals, to assess the quality and storage stability of plant products.
Procedure:
- Grind the plant material to a uniform size and weigh a representative sample of 10-20 grams.
- Place the sample in a suitable container, such as a microwave-safe dish or a glass beaker covered with a watch glass.
- Heat the sample in a microwave oven at high power for 2-5 minutes, depending on the moisture content of the material.
- Remove the sample and weigh it again. The difference in weight represents the loss of moisture.
- Calculate the moisture content as a percentage using the following formula:
Moisture Content (%) = (Initial Weight – Final Weight) / Initial Weight * 100
